Staying Warm this Winter
STAYING WARM THIS WINTER
Every winter we read about elderly people who cannot afford to heat their homes adequately, sometimes leading to hypothermia and in extreme cases death due to the cold. The Government offers Winter Fuel Payments to help people aged 60 and over and every couple/individual should qualify for a payment up to a maximum of £300 to help with their heating costs during winter. If you receive a State Pension then you should receive your payment automatically. If you don’t receive a State Pension and/or you haven’t received your payment then a claim form should be completed. This is available from the Winter Fuel Payment helpline on 08459 151515. If you or someone you know qualifies for this help please ensure that it is claimed.
There are a number of simple things that can help you stay warm in your home -
Avoid sitting still in one place for long periods and keep moving regularly. If you have difficulty walking, moving your arms and legs and wiggling your toes and fingers will help.
Wear several layers of thin clothing that will keep you warmer by trapping air between them. Clothes made from wool, polyester or fleecy synthetic fibres are usually warmer and thermal underwear is recommended.
Regular hot meals and hot drinks will provide warmth and energy.
Finally, keep all the rooms you use during the day warm - a temperature of 21 degrees is recommended - and warm your bedroom at night before going to bed.
