The need for Flu Vaccinations
The Need for Flu Vaccination

As we move towards winter, and as the weather gets colder, everyone needs to consider the dangers of flu and should seek to protect themselves and their loved ones from catching this most unpleasant, and in some cases, fatal virus.
Flu is a respiratory illness that has a number of common symptoms including the sudden onset of fever, shivering, headaches, aching muscles and joints, and a dry cough / sore throat.
Most people recover completely from flu in 1-2 weeks, but for some it can lead to more serious illnesses such as bronchitis and pneumonia. These illnesses may require treatment in hospital and can be life threatening, especially for the elderly, asthmatics and those in poor health.
The elderly have a much greater risk of severe complications because their resistance to infection tends to be less effective. It is therefore very important that all sensible precautions are taken to avoid the virus.
Routine immunisation offers the best protection and people who are at high risk of flu should be vaccinated as it is difficult to avoid infection, especially if there is an epidemic.
Vaccinations are available free of charge to all persons over 65 and those who are adjudged to be especially at risk. Vaccinations should be arranged with individuals GP’s or a Community Nurse. If you know of someone who should receive this vaccination, but may be unable to organise it themselves, please help to make these arrangements on their behalf.
